If you book an organised trip through TUI, for example, you won’t have to worry about how the transfer from the airport works as you will simply be picked up, but in all other cases it is nice to know how to get to your accommodation.
Zanzibar airport
Zanzibar’s airport bears the name Kisauni Airport. And is just over 3 miles from Stone Town. It is not a big airport and has few facilities. But is does have wifi available if you want to check out anything before your trip to your flat.
Taxi from Zanzibar airport
If you don’t have a transfer to your hotel and you’re going somewhere other than Stone Town, the best option is to take a taxi from the airport. If you are going to Stone Town, we recommend the option below. If you want to go from the airport to the coast, you should expect a fare of about US$50 (that’s about €45 converted). It’s best to have your hotel book a taxi for you in advance. That way, you can be sure to get in with a reliable taxi driver.

By local bus
From the airport, you can catch a ‘dala dala’ to your destination. This is the cheapest option, but also the most complicated and stressful. We recommend this option the least. The dala dala’s give a number and final destination, but which one you need exactly you will have to ask because it could just be that your destination is not the final destination. The only problem with this is that not everyone can be trusted. So check with 2 people if necessary.
You pay in this local bus both for yourself and for your luggage. Do not ask about the fare in advance, as they may charge you a higher amount. So you just sit in the right dala dala and pay at the time someone passes by who also asks all the other passengers to pay.
Incidentally, these vans leave the moment they are full. And full in this case is really full. So there can be a lot of people in the van.

By rental car
Of course, you can also hire a car on Zanzibar and travel with it from the airport to your accommodation. But this is not exactly an easy task either. There are a few important things to bear in mind:
Firstly, people drive on the left side of the road on the island. So keep that in mind if you’re not from the U.K. Furthermore, driving in Stone Town is strongly advised against and the condition of the roads is obviously not what you are used to in Europe.
But renting a car also gives you a lot of freedom in return. You can easily travel from destination to destination. And it is also cheaper than driving around by taxi.
